Happy First Day of Fall!

When I awoke this morning I was greeted by a hearty "Happy first day of fall!" from my seven year old. He loves calendars and watches, keeping track of things and keeping us on schedule. He loves to ask me what time it is and then correct me when I round up or down. To him time is important and precise. For example at breakfast I was informed that it was really exactly midnight for only one second each day, which I hadn't ever considered before, but that's true. I hope he remembers he likes schedules and being on time when he's a teenager.

As a side note yesterday was "Elephant Appreciation Day". Did you tell your elephant how much he/she means to you? If not it's never too late. (True story - Dorthy Gish - it's on one of our calendars. Last week was "talk like a pirate day" - the lady on the local early morning news really did.)

Returning to the subject of end of summer - beginning of fall. Yesterday summer went out like a lion. We knew it may rain on us at soccer and we were slightly prepared but not prepared for the extreme cloud burst we did get. During the third quarter of S-'s game there were a couple of drops and then buckets of rain and hurricane winds (at least that's what it felt like). Luckily Dad was able to get all of the kids in the car quickly and came back to help me. We (including our stuff) were soaked through. The exodus of cars from the soccer field parking lot was large and quick. C- the weatherman of the family predicted it was going to be over in 10 - 15 min. and thought we should stick it out for J-'s game. We decided to go get donuts and come back. The donuts were a welcome treat and C- was right. In approximately 15 min. the storm had blown over and J- was able to play his game. Unfortunately he lost, his first loss of the season. He had a good attitude about it because he had played his best friend's team. He said that if they had to lose to anyone he was glad it was his friend's team. Then the two boys spent the better part of the day together enjoying each other's dazzling whit and stimulating conversation. They are just two peas in a pod and they make me smile. We finished off the day with a tasty bowl of Chocolate chili and a fond farewell to hot summer days and nights. Both of which we will be glad to welcome back in 9 months or so.
