Reunion, Reunion, Read All About It

Labor Day weekend we had the annual W- family reunion.
The day started out with Gma & Gpa cooking and serving breakfast to their family.
Originally breakfast was supposed to be at the campgrounds but the weather wasn't cooperating so we had breakfast at their house.
Gpa has made this awesome round table that seats 16 and then can fold up and be put away when it's not needed. So we all got to sit around the round table and visit while we ate. (I should have taken a picture of the table)

After breakfast and some visiting we headed to the campgrounds for the big reunion with all of MDH's extended family.

Sweet Cheeks got to participate in the Secret, Candy Garden. This is her last year so she did her best to enjoy every moment of it.

After the Secret Garden the kids got ready for the candy drop.
They just get so excited it's really hard to wait.

After the candy drop there was
skeet shooting
golfing
relay races
bounce house
face painting
train rides
money dig
lunch
and lots of other fun things

We had a fun day and the kids are already talking about next year's reunion.

Thank you everyone for making it such a fun day.

As we left the reunion another storm was brewing and by the time we got home this is what we got to see out our front door.

Not only was it an awesome rainbow, it was an awesome TRIPLE RAINBOW!
We couldn't get a picture of the triple but you can kind of see the double.

A couple of us

On our way home from Jackson we stopped at the Lunch Counter Lookout on the Snake River
and we took the opportunity to have our picture taken.
I haven't wanted any pictures of me taken for a long time.
But when you loose a few pounds it tends to make you feel better about yourself so here I am with my love in a couple of pictures that my BIL snapped with his phone.

Trying to climb on that fence was the hardest part. The first log was so high, I felt like a little kid trying to climb on a horse. Then I started laughing and I laughed so hard I couldn't climb. My BIL snapped a few shots of me trying to climb and laughing but he hasn't sent those to me. They better not end up on facebook is all I have to say.
Eventually I made it on the fence, but only after going under the fence and coming at it from up the hill. I guess I'm not as young as I used to be.

2011 Family Slideshow = Anchor

Slideshow made using iMovie.
Music: Mindy Gledhill, Anchor
It's what I do when I'm home all day with a sickey who wants to be held all day and is almost too big to be held all day.
She helped me pick photos and music.
Enjoy!

I Remember....

I was 27.
I was a wife and a mother of 3.
My husband was getting ready for work and turned on the national news.
He came in to the bedroom and said, "I think an airplane just hit into one of the Twin Towers in New York. I think we might be under attack."
We?
As in our country? As in here on our soil? As in our brothers and sisters of one nation under God?
I didn't want my husband to go to work.
My heart ached for the families left behind.
I was afraid.
It's funny how a moment, a day can be branded in your memory. How you know you will never forget where you were and how sick you felt. And how you knew your world, your country would never be the same.
I found hope in the resilience of our spirit of community and in the humble faces turned to a Father in Heaven who is mindful of all.
And I found peace in the words of a living prophet who speaks for the Lord today.

President Gorden B. Hinkley, Sunday Morning session of General Conf. 2001.
As I read his words again today I can remember the spirit whispering peace to my heart.

We are people of peace. We are followers of the Christ who was and is the Prince of Peace. But there are times when we must stand up for right and decency, for freedom and civilization, just as Moroni rallied his people in his day to the defense of their wives, their children, and the cause of liberty (see Alma 48:10).
On the Larry King television broadcast the other night, I was asked what I think of those who, in the name of their religion, carry out such infamous activities. I replied, “Religion offers no shield for wickedness, for evil, for those kinds of things. The God in whom I believe does not foster this kind of action. He is a God of mercy. He is a God of love. He is a God of peace and reassurance, and I look to Him in times such as this as a comfort and a source of strength.”....
Great are the promises concerning this land of America. We are told unequivocally that it “is a choice land, and whatsoever nation shall possess it shall be free from bondage, and from captivity, and from all other nations under heaven, if they will but serve the God of the land, who is Jesus Christ” (Ether 2:12). This is the crux of the entire matter—obedience to the commandments of God.
The Constitution under which we live, and which has not only blessed us but has become a model for other constitutions, is our God-inspired national safeguard ensuring freedom and liberty, justice and equality before the law.....
Now, brothers and sisters, we must do our duty, whatever that duty might be. Peace may be denied for a season. Some of our liberties may be curtailed. We may be inconvenienced. We may even be called on to suffer in one way or another. But God our Eternal Father will watch over this nation and all of the civilized world who look to Him. He has declared, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” (Ps. 33:12). Our safety lies in repentance. Our strength comes of obedience to the commandments of God.
Let us be prayerful. Let us pray for righteousness. Let us pray for the forces of good. Let us reach out to help men and women of goodwill, whatever their religious persuasion and wherever they live. Let us stand firm against evil, both at home and abroad. Let us live worthy of the blessings of heaven, reforming our lives where necessary and looking to Him, the Father of us all. He has said, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Ps. 46:10).
Are these perilous times? They are. But there is no need to fear. We can have peace in our hearts and peace in our homes. We can be an influence for good in this world, every one of us.

By the Numbers

(Photo by my brother, June 2005)

If it were simply about the numbers it'd look something like this.

What started with 1 boy and 1 girl
Continues 55 years later.
Numerous moves and homes
18 states lived in
Approximately 14 countries visited while serving our country
1 LDS mission served
4 sons + 4 daughters-in-law,2 daughters + 2 sons-in-law = 6 Temple marriages =
12 grandsons
19 granddaughters
6 great-grandchildren

But it's not just about the numbers because there have been uncountable

Prayers offered
Laughs shared
Tears shed
Hands held
Games played
Hugs given
Meals prepared and shared
Lessons learned
Help bestowed
Stories told
Scrapes and Illnesses healed
Examples lived
Testimonies entrusted

and a

Legacy Endowed.

We love you Mom and Dad!
Happy Anniversary!

Oregon

Ten years ago this year this sweet family, minus one in from the picture...minus two from our family now, moved to a little town called
Grants Pass Oregon.
Our oldest had just barely turned 4 and she thought we were moving to
Grant's Pants.
She didn't want to live in any body's old pants.
We assured her we'd be living in a house, not some body's old pants, once we figured out what she was worried about.
MDH and I and our three oldest
Banana 4
Duder 2
Doodle 3 months
packed our few....very few things and started a new life in a new town, new state.
AND
We loved it! We made so many good memories as a family and with friends.
I feel as if Grants Pass in a way is my Alma Mater. I can't think of a word or phrase that exactly describes how I feel about Grants Pass. So Alma Mater, mother of my spirit, is the closest I can think of.
Northern Utah is my home but in a way Grants Pass will always be my hometown.
It's the place I really came to know myself and trust myself as a wife, a mother, and friend.

MDH and I were able to go and visit a couple of weeks ago. We went on the trip so we could celebrate the life of a dear friend and participate in his memorial service but we also took the opportunity to celebrate part of the life we had there and catch up with friends.

It was such a quick trip but we packed as much into it as we could.
Thanks to my Mom and Dad for staying with the kids.
We flew into Portland Thursday night and picked up our rental car the next morning and headed south to Grants Pass (approx. 4 hr drive). During our 5 years in OR whenever we visited Portland we'd drive past the outlet mall but we never seemed to have time to stop. This time we made time. We bought enough we had to mail it home to ourselves......Good Times!!!

In GP we stayed with one of my best friends in the whole world Cheryn and her husband Alan and their son Austen. I need to apologize to Austen for not bringing the kids with us. He was bored out of his mind to have to listen to us old folks jabber on and on I'm sure. Sorry. But it sure was enjoyable for us.
Cheryn was my first Visiting Teacher there. She taught me what it was to truly love those you serve. She's amazing! And usually I can't tell people about her because I cry every time....cry in a happy way....she's that good!

A couple of funny things. When we moved back to Utah we thought we'd see people we knew all the time when we were out and about places but we hardly ever did/do.
When we were in GP it was a completely different story. Every place we went we saw people we knew. It was GREAT! It made us feel good that people remembered and recognized us too.

So, we decided to drive past a couple of the houses we lived in there. 3 houses in 5 years = YIKES!
Our first house we didn't drive by and didn't get any pictures of.
The other two we shouldn't have driven by because it left us feeling depressed because of the lack of yard care. When we lived there MDH was always meticulous about our yards and gardens.

Here's our S.Street house, where we lived when Mr.Man was born. The rose bush I planted is gone and there is way too much trash in the yard.....so sad.

Here's the only picture I could find on my computer of the front of the house when we lived there. This was Duder's first day of school. I've never been able to grow inpatients any where else like I did there.
And we didn't keep our trash and old furniture in the front yard.

The kids wanted us to get a picture of the blue house we lived in....our last house in GP.
Again, the grass really needs to be cut but at least there's no trash in it....well at least you can't see it.
There used to be a huge sweet gum tree in the front but it's gone now. I guess the owners didn't like cleaning up all of the spike bombs. We're still finding some of those in our cars and it's been 5 years.

Saturday morning we visited the farmers market, had fresh doughnuts and tamales for breakfast and then rafted the Rogue River with a group of our friend's friends. We had an amazing time. The water was high and fast so our trip was a lot quicker than usual but still very enjoyable. When I get the pictures from the rafting trip I'll post some.
That evening Cheryn invited some other friends over for dinner too and we loved getting to see them as well.

Sunday we met at the river for the memorial service. It was a very informal gathering and just the way I'm sure he would have liked it. It was fitting to be in such a beautiful place that he loved so much remembering him and the way he touched all of our lives.

After the service we drove back to the Portland area and went to church with our good friends Tyler and Shonda. It'd been forever....well... 5 years since we'd seen them and it was so good to get to laugh and visit with them and their beautiful daughters. And, bonus, Shonda made the most delicious dinner, southwest pulled pork salad. So YUMMY.
What a blessing good friends are!

We spent the night in a room at the Holiday Inn by the airport which we got for $30 by bidding on Priceline.com. The room was great, a really nice room, but the view was a $30 view (the roof and a parking lot) that's ok though we weren't there long enough to be bothered by the view.
By 4:30 am we were back at the airport dropping off the car and going through security.
By 9:00am MDT we were in SLC and by 9:30 am we were  home passing out surprises to the kids.
and
By 11:00am I had our bags unpacked and laundry started and Duder at his tennis lesson.
Back to the real world.

We've been asked if we would move back, my answer is, Yes, in a heartbeat, if, it were 10hrs closer to here. This is where our family is. So, with all of the neat things we were able to do there and great experiences we had, I feel like the relationship our kids are developing with their grandparents and cousins here, now, is just as important if not even more important than what we had.

We can't wait to take our kids back there to visit though......and when we do we'll for sure visit the pharmacy and have a phosphate.

While I'm looking at old pictures on my computer! These are cute and these are older!

Had to share these because they're just cute!

MR. Man @ Blue Lake

Sweet Cheeks in a hat.

Me and my mom.

Me and my Grandma.

MDH and his mom.

I know I've shared these pics before but their just so cute. Totally worth sharing again!

Old Picture Tag

So, I guess I was tagged a few weeks ago. Sorry Erin I missed it. I've been a little busy.
I was supposed to go to the oldest picture file in my computer and tell the story of the tenth photo. I'm cheating a little. This is not the oldest file because the oldest file is from the day we got our camera and it's all movies of the kids in the Children's Theatre production of Jungle Book but this was taken the next day. I have older pictures on here but they weren't taken by our digital camera.

July 30, 2005
Banana - 8
Duder - 7
Doodle - just turned 5

The kids were sitting in their favorite Popsicle eating spot, the front porch.
We had been living in Reno for a whole month.
And, I was trying out the new camera!

a-ha , take on me, literal version video from you-tube

If you didn't already know ---
I am an 80's girl.
One Friday night (when I was a preteen), after hearing this song, seeing the video and
LOVING IT,
I called my favorite radio station and requested it.
I waited for HOURS with my finger at the ready on the record button of my tape player so I could record the song of all songs and not miss a note.
Around 1 am I finally went to bed disappointed that they never played it.
A couple of weeks later they played it every 30 minutes and I got so sick of it.
Now I'm not so sick of it and it brings back good memories of a simpler time.
This particular version (actual music video w/lyrics changed to say what's happening in the video) CRACKS ME UP!!!

(okay, so I'm just posting the link because of questionable video links pulled up by youtube after the video, they also say something about kicking a donkey toward they end of the video, the poor animal, I really don't think it's right to take your frustrations out on an innocent animal. Now, if they were going to kick a ferret I would understand)

under the weather

Really..........Seriously.........NOT a good time for me or any of my family to be sick.........BUT...........we are. SIGH!!!!!! GROAN!!!!
Not to worry though, I don't think it's the bird flu.
Although, some of us have felt like/wished we could die I think we're all going to recover.
The dreaded flu virus is not kind!!

Some of us have had the stomach flu.......others (me) have had the fever, aches, stuffy, head exploding congestion. Here's a pic MDH snapped of me yesterday morning.
I've seen better days, haven't I? This is such a bad illness it made me grow facial hair!(long drawn out woe is me sigh).

So here's the thing. Monday Duder got the stomach flu and had to miss the B-family Christmas party, Santa and everything. Wednesday Banana and Sweet Cheeks got it. Thursday was Doodle's turn. Now the wait is on to see if MR. Man is going to get it. Here's hoping what he had last weekend was a less violent form of what the other kids had this week. AND --- here's hoping MDH and I have washed our hands and cloroxed everything enough that he stays healthy and away from the stomach yucks and I just stick with my face is going to fall off yucks.
Because, we have things to do, furniture to arrange, walls to paint, boxes to unpack, Christmas trees to decorate, presents to make, lights to hang, neighbors to meet.......You know how it is!
Here's a question.....If you have more than one child would you rather they all get the yuckies together or one at a time? I'm all for together! Nothing like family together-ness. Seriously I'd rather have it all over with at once rather than drawn out over weeks. It is hard to have every one sick at once but then you get it over with and you move on with your life.

On a funny side note.
If you know MDH you know he has a talent - nay - a GIFT for rewriting words to songs to fit special occasions, moods, what have you.
For example; the song I Swear sung by John Michael Montgomery and boys 2 men.
New lyrics by MDH
I swear
when my mom and my dad aren't around.
I swear
when I stub my big toe on the ground.
There's more but I can't remember it. Anyway, all of our kids have inherited this GIFT from their father but, Duder really has a knack for it. So, the other day as I was walking around in an illness induced stupor, mumbling to myself, I asked my boy to come up with some lyrics to a Christmas song about having the flu. He sat there for a moment thinking, then he started to smile and giggle to himself, and I said, "Change that. Lets make it about having a cold because there's too many gross things about the stomach flu and I don't want to hear those put to Christmas music." He then got a little mischievous grin and said, "Yeah, your right. That was turning out a little gross in my head." He then came up with two songs for me. I'll have to post them later when he's here so I can get the words just right.

Merry Christmas!
May your holidays be HEALTHY!

another student of the week

This week it's Duder's turn to be student of the week!
I'm so glad he gets this chance to be honored before he has to change schools.
So I thought I'd attempt to honor him by posting some embarrassing photos.
Just kidding. I don't think they're embarrassing but adorable.
Don't you love his red hair? He was about 15 months old.

School picture 2008

Okay----so these next few photos might be a little embarrassing. If not for him then for his parents. I found these pictures when I was hunting some photos up for his poster and I had to scan them in.

We are so proud of our Duder Man.

It's official

We are no longer first-time-home-buyers.
We're
FIRST-TIME-HOME-OWNERS!!!!!
CRAZY!

It's been exhausting, frustrating, interesting and exhilarating but we're here!
We closed on the house last Tuesday and then we drove over to the house.
When we drove up and I saw the "sold" on the "for sale" sign I cried.
We've wanted this for so long...and I LOVE THE HOUSE....
..and I just have to say this is the best birthday/Christmas/valentines/Easter/anniversary/4th of July/president's day present I've ever gotten.
Saturday, lots of family and a new neighbor helped us move our stuff out of storage and into the new house.
Thank you everyone. I don't know what we would have done without the help.
Okay, I know what we would have done. We would have cried and then moved everything ourselves and thrown our backs out and be too sore to move for the next decade.
So Thank you again!

By the way, The kids love the house too.

Thanksgiving Poem, by, My Talented Daughter

I'm Thankful For:
By Miss Banana Montana (my daughter)
I'm thankful for the sunrise
and sunset everyday.
I'm thankful for the song bird
and its happy way.
I'm thankful for my family
whom I love very dear.
I'm thankful for the scriptures
the pathway they make clear.
I'm thankful for the trees,
the flowers, and all the little beasts.
But, most of all I'm thankful for this splendid royal feast.
