Words every mother just can't wait to write in her child's book of remembrance. I'm being sarcastic of course.
Saturday March 29th will be the date I will be writing down for our sweet little one's first E.R. visit.
Sometime on Friday afternoon while playing outside she fell and got what I thought was a sliver in her wrist. I didn't notice it until after 4:30 (the time our pediatrician's office stops taking phone calls). The part we could see in her wrist was about the size of the ball part of a straight pin. By 5:00 M.D.H. and I had both tried to get it out but just couldn't. We decided we would let it be and take her to the pediatric urgent care the next morning. By 8:00pm a spot about the size of a nickel surrounding the sliver was red and swollen. I decided to outline the red part with a marker so we could see if the red part was any bigger by the morning. (I happened to use a orange sharpie and she thought her orange and red circle on her wrist was, "pree-ey" that's how she says pretty.)
By morning the red spot had gotten bigger and she had a red streak going up her arm. The pediatric urgent care wouldn't take her because they said they didn't handle "trauma" cases and we needed to take her to the emergency room. So off we went.
The E.R. waiting room is always an interesting place to people watch and always a cringe inducing experience. Luckily, we were taken directly back to be seen by a doctor and we got to wait in our own little curtain area. While waiting for the doctor she fell asleep but this worked out great because they were able to numb her while she was sleeping. She woke up while they were trying to extract it but because she was numb she didn't fuss too much and they were able to get it out fairly easily.
What I thought was a sliver turned out to be a thorn that was approximately 3/4 of an inch long.
They gave us antibiotics and strict instructions to return immediately to the hospital if the streak moved any further up her arm.
As of this morning (Sunday, March 30th) she has no red streak on her arm and only a little redness around the puncture. She really doesn't like having to wear a band-aid but she will tolerate the princess ones, she thinks they're "pree-ey". --She really, really hates having to have a warm compress put on it but she is just going to have to deal with that.

Below is a picture of her wound this morning.
This is not the thorn but it is similar in size to the culprit only her thorn had the edges of the wide part broken off.

Here's one of her pree-ey bandages.

Over all, she has dealt with the whole ordeal very well and as you can see by these pictures she's just as adorable and spunky as ever.

Oh! Poor thing. I feel so bad for her. One time L- got a sliver in her bottom. We decided given the placement of the sliver that we would wait until we got home to remove it. She complained the whole way home and I thought she was being a really big baby about it. When we went to pull it out there was only about an inch showing above the skin that I could get ahold of, but there was so much below the skin that all the skin sucked up around it and came to a conelike point as I was pulling. The splinter kept coming and coming and the skin kept pulling up. When it all finally came out there was about 2 inches below her skin no lie! It was really gross. As far as her being a big baby, she probably should have put up a bigger fuss. Once again, MOTHER OF THE YEAR for me!
OH Wow! I agree, I feel bad for her, poor little sweetheart. That's a huge thing to be in someones hand, let alone a tiny little hand. She looks so cute in her pictures. Thanks for the pictures. Glad she is doing OK.
